Keel laid for littoral combat ship Savannah (LCS 28)

first_img View post tag: USS Savannah View post tag: US Navy View post tag: Independence-Variant US shipbuilder Austal hosted a keel-laying ceremony for the future littoral combat ship USS Savannah (LCS 28) at its shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, on September 20.Savannah is the 14th Independence-variant littoral combat ship (LCS).“We are honored to lay the keel of what will one day be a magnificent combat ship that will defend our great country as our sailors operate her around the globe,” said Capt. Mike Taylor, LCS program manager. While the keel laying traditionally represents the formal start of a ship’s construction, fabrication of the ship begins months in advance. Today, keel laying continues to symbolically recognize the joining of the ship’s components and the ceremonial beginning of the ship. There are currently four other Independence variant LCSs undergoing construction at Austal USA, with five additional ships in pre-production planning. The Independence variant LCS are based on a trimaran hull design, displacing 3,200 tons and measuring 127.4 meters in length. They are designed to reach speeds of 40+ knots.US Navy file photo of an Independence-variant LCS Photo: Photo: Austal View post tag: Austal Share this articlelast_img read more

Sunderland sign Altidore

first_img The 23-year-old arrived on Wearside on Monday to complete a medical and he has now become manager Paolo Di Canio’s sixth signing of the summer. A statement published on Sunderland’s official website, www.safc.com, read: “Sunderland AFC have confirmed the signing of US striker Jozy Altidore from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.” Press Association Altidore began his career with Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls before joining Villarreal in 2008. He spent time on loan at Xerez, Besiktas and Hull – scoring one league goal as the Tigers were relegated from the Premier League in the 2009-10 season. The striker agreed a permanent move to AZ in July 2011 and finished his first campaign in Holland with a haul of 22 goals in all competitions before adding 23 goals for the 2012-13 Eredivisie season, helping the club to a first KNVB Cup in 31 years. Altidore has also scored 17 goals in 60 appearances for his country after making his senior debut in 2007. Having failed to score since November 2011, he ended a lengthy goal drought in an international friendly victory over Germany in Washington DC last month. He joins goalkeeper Vito Mannone, defenders Valentin Roberge and Modibo Diakite, midfielder Cabral and winger David Moberg Karlsson as part of Di Canio’s new-look squad at the Stadium of Light and the club confirmed he is expected to join his new team-mates at their training camp in Italy. center_img Sunderland have completed the signing of American striker Jozy Altidore from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.last_img read more
