Thomas effectively seals his first Tour de France title

first_imgBritain’s Geraint Thomas, wearing the overall leader’s yellow jersey reacts as he crosses the finish line during the twentieth stage of the Tour de France cycling race, an individual time trial over 31 kilometers (19.3 miles) with start in Saint-Pee-sur-Nivelle and finish in Espelette, France, Saturday, July 28, 2018. (AP Photo/Christophe Ena)ESPELETTE, France — No longer merely a support rider for Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas is going to Paris in the yellow jersey. The Welshman with Team Sky effectively sealed his first Tour de France title by protecting his lead in the time trial on the penultimate stage on Saturday.ADVERTISEMENT Report: Disney dropping the ‘Fox’ from movie studio names “The strongest guy has won this Tour de France,” Froome said. “Tomorrow, to stand up on the podium with G, it’s going to be a really proud moment for me.”Thomas, known as “G,” was a support rider during Froome’s title rides but he became Sky’s undisputed leader when Froome cracked in the grueling 17th stage through the Pyrenees.Thomas and Froome have been together since their days on the small Barloworld team a decade ago.“Because we’ve been teammates and friends for so long, it made it easier to communicate honestly,” Froome said. “It was clear as soon as we hit the Alps that Geraint was in better physical condition than me. It was pretty simple, really.”Wearing an all-yellow skin suit on a bike in the red, white and blue colors of the British flag, Thomas was the last rider to start.ADVERTISEMENT Lacson: Calamity fund cut; where did P4 billion go? He embraced his wife, Sara Elen, as soon as he got off his bike.“The last time I cried was when I got married,” Thomas said as he teared up.Thomas is poised to become the third British rider — and first Welshman — to win the Tour after Bradley Wiggins and Froome. He will make it Sky’s sixth victory in the last seven years.“It’s insane really — just all the interest in Cardiff,” Thomas said. “Great to put it on the map. We’re a small nation and we really get behind anyone that’s successful. By the sounds of it, it’s gone pretty crazy back home, so looking forward to going back to celebrate.”An all-around rider who began his career on the track, Thomas helped Britain to gold medals in team pursuit at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics before turning his full attention to road racing.Thomas claimed the yellow jersey by winning Stage 11 in the Alps, followed that up with another victory atop Alpe d’Huez a day later, and defended his advantage through the Pyrenees.“He was in the shape of his life,” Dumoulin said. “He didn’t make any mistakes. CRMA facilitated over 1000 jobs for youths in 2017

first_img– 700 registered in 2018The Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency, under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Protection, registered some 2000 job-seekers drawn from Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six and Ten for 2017. One thousand of those registered were provided jobs. Most persons seeking jobs are between ages 15 and 35, Chief Recruitment and Manpower Officer Valarie Moore told the Department of Public Information (DPI). She said that for 2018 (January to March), some 700 persons registered for jobs, about 200 of which were placed in jobs.Moore explained that for January alone, the agency saw a total of 95 persons, while in February some 169 persons registered. These numbers, she said, do not include those that are already in the system awaiting job placement.“We have a term we call submission, which means sending someone to take part in interviews. And so sometimes that number will be more than the registration that we have, but we normally look at those persons in the system already,” Moore added. For those persons with two and three subjects at Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) and little or no skills, Moore said the call centres usually take off those persons.Moore noted that they advise persons on where they can go to improve their qualifications and get assistance. They also share with job-seekers what are some of the benefits of obtaining a skill and/or academic qualifications. The agency also collaborates with the Board of Industrial Training (BIT), which provides training for unqualified individuals through the Government Technical Institute (GTI) and the Guyana School of Agriculture. However, she said that sometimes some of the youths do not need jobs, but need advice, or in some cases public assistance. Those persons are referred to the Woman of Worth (WOW) and the Sustainable Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Development (SLED) programmes under the Ministry of Social Protection. The Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency is a division of the Social Protection Ministry. It registers applicants for employment, taking specific note of their occupational qualifications, experiences, and desires. It evaluates, if necessary, their physical and vocational abilities. Its objective is to place individuals seeking jobs in suitable employment, while providing career guidance and counselling. The Agency was established by the Government of Guyana in October 1944.last_img read more

Here’s the latest…Ultimatum issuedJuventus look to be growing tired of the pantomime that is Vidal’s future and have finally put their foot down, issuing an ultimatum to the Chilean to make his mind up by August 15. L.A. gains 44 million pounds

first_imgLos Angeles County adults have gained an average of 6 pounds each over the past eight years – for a total of 44 million pounds – increasing the risk of contracting life-threatening illnesses, says a study released today by the health department. At the current rate of weight gain, the study predicted that 25 percent – or of every four adults in the county – will be obese by 2010 and that the effects may start to decrease life expectancy by two to five years. “This could reduce two centuries of increases in life expectancy,” said Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding, the county health officer. “We need to stop this terrible epidemic. And we haven’t seen the worst of it because of the lag time. “This translates into big increases in diabetes, heart disease, stroke, muscular-skeletal problems and maybe an increase in some cancers.” Building on advances in providing LAUSD students with healthier vending-machine beverages and snacks, officials are working on increasing the amount of physical activity and health education in the schools. “There are state mandates around physical education in the schools, but whether they are really followed, I don’t know,” said Dr. Francine Kaufman, director of the Comprehensive Childhood Diabetes Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “There are also mandates on what is taught in health classes. The question is, who is delivering those messages and are we really turning out children with health literacy?” Health experts note a variety of factors behind the obesity epidemic, including more sedentary lifestyles, more opportunities to eat and a lack of food labeling at restaurants. “You can’t walk 20 yards without a snacking opportunity,” Fielding said. “We have gotten into patterns of consuming portions that are not healthful. “All-you-can-eat is not in the interest of your health.” Troy Anderson, (213) 974-8985 troy.anderson@dailynews.com To help fight obesity, health officials recommend: 30 to 60 minutes of daily moderate physical activity such as walking, swimming, biking, dancing or gardening. A healthy breakfast. Parents eating meals with their children. Reading food labels and buying foods that are low in fat, cholesterol and salt and high in fiber. Drinking less soda and high-sugar juice drinks. Limiting television and video games to less than two hours a day and avoiding eating in front of the TV. Eating two cups of fruit, 2 cups of vegetables and three servings of whole grain each day. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. An estimated 29 percent of Latino adults is obese, compared with 28 percent of African-Americans, 17 percent of whites and 6 percent of Asians. Of even greater concern, officials said, is a finding that the percentage of overweight middle school children rose from 18 percent in 1999 to nearly 22 percent in 2003. “If this trend continues, then one out of three kids could be overweight by 2010,” Fielding said. “We’re robbing our children of bright futures if we don’t focus on stopping this and reversing it. We are setting them up for so many problems later in life.” The county Department of Health Services is joining today with the city and Los Angeles Unified School District officials in a Leadership for Healthy Living Forum in Elysian Park designed to address the issue and develop possible solutions. last_img read more
