Chinas Liu says trade talks with US have not broken down

BEIJING — Chinese Vice Premier Liu He says trade talks with the U.S. have not broken down.Hong Kong’s Phoenix TV on Saturday showed Liu telling reporters that the failure to reach an agreement in the tariffs war with the U.S. during meetings in Washington on Thursday and Friday was “a small setback.”Liu said he was cautiously optimistic. He spoke to reporters before leaving Washington for Beijing after the talks ended with China insisting a deal requires that tariffs on its exports be lifted first.Liu also said the two sides were disagreeing over the amount of goods China would pledge to purchase from the U.S. to help reduce the American trade deficit.The Trump administration raised import taxes on billions of dollars in Chinese goods from 10% to 25% Friday.The Associated Press read more

Public urged to protect the Government

The public have been urged to protect the Government and not be misled by what they see taking place in Parliament on television.Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that after 20 years the United National Party (UNP) was able to form a Government. Kiriella said now that the opposition has formed a Government, the public must take efforts to protect the Government. He said that President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had agreed on the need to find a permanent political solution for the North and East.Kiriella said that the coalition was able to also prevent international pressure on the country as both main political parties were now working together.He also said that while members of the Government and the opposition engage in heated arguments in Parliament, when they are outside Parliament the mood is different. He said that no one believed the UNP, which was in the opposition this time last year, could form the next Government. “We have good chats outside Parliament like friends,” he said.
