Black Lives Matter Protest

After 2 weeks of protesting outside Toronto Police head quarters, the Black Lives Demonstration has ended, but the pursuit of equality is far from over.Premier Kathleen Wynne spoke with demonstrators in person on April 4th to stress the the urgency of the issues. The group has given Wynne, Police Chief Mark Saunders and Mayor John Tory 300 hours to meet with group organziers. They’re demanding, among other things, changes to the special investigation unit, elimination of carding and the release of the identity of the officer who shot and killed a 45-year old black man last year.Activists in Hamilton had a mix reaction to the demonstrations and the Premier’s promises for change. McMaster Univeristy Professor Dr. Gary Warner who was put into the Order of Canada and received the Hamilton Black History Month J.C. Holland award emailed CHCH to give his reaction to Premier Wynne’s promises to demonstrators saying:“The ball is in the Premier’s court to demonstrate that the issues related to racial profiling and carding are being addressed proactively and in an effective manner by her government.” read more
