first_imgTorino coach Mazzarri: Blame me for Lecce lossby Carlos Volcanoa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveTorino coach Walter Mazzarri was left frustrated after defeat to Lecce. However, he insists he was to blame for the 2-1 loss.Mazzarri said, “I want to apologise to the fans, as they were exceptional despite this being our worst performance for a very long time.“We got almost everything wrong tonight. The internationals arrived late, but playing on Monday we even had an extra day compared to most others, so maybe I just got things wrong in training.“We had too many players who were sluggish and lost, they looked like the bad brothers of the players who beat Atalanta. I saw at least four who just weren’t themselves, so that must be my fault, as I was unable to motivate or focus them.“Aside from possession, which at 2 miles per hour is futile anyway, we got nothing right. We didn’t even put in decent crosses other than from corners.“We had to concentrate on what we’ve always done well and we didn’t. If you look at their first goal, it’s inexplicable. You cannot concede a goal like that.“Last season, we were constantly pinning opponents back and then at times incidents didn’t go our way, including VAR interpretations. Tonight, Lecce looked capable of scoring a third or fourth goal.” About the authorCarlos VolcanoShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Bluegreen algae blooms popping up in Charlie Lake

first_imgFORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Residents in the North Peace are being advised about the presence of algae blooms that have appeared in Charlie Lake.Blooms of algae were photographed earlier this week by staff members at Poor Boy Trucking, who spotted a turquoise-coloured slime on the lake’s surface.A photo of a blue-green algae bloom taken by Tim Toews of Poor Boy Trucking. Submitted photo Blue-green algae – or cyanobacteria – is naturally occurring and can look like scum, grass clippings, fuzz or globs on the surface of the water. The blooms can be blue-green, greenish-brown, brown, or pinkish-red, and often smell musty or grassy.Bruce Kosugi, who is a director on the Board of the Charlie Lake Conservation Society, said that algal blooms are an annual occurrence on the surface of Charlie Lake since the lake’s hydrology is well-suited for the algae to thrive.“It’s nothing new. There’s evidence of it going back hundreds of years from the sediment studies that have been done. It’s a shallow lake and it’s nutrient-rich. The summer conditions lend to the formation of different algae, but at this time of year, the blue-green algae does start to bloom.”At the beginning of July, Northern Health issued a bulletin reminding residents of precautions they need to take if they encounter blue-green algae.Kosugi said that the main issue with the algae occurs when it begins to die off, during which some species of the algae releases toxins as the algae’s cells break down. People who come in contact with visible blue-green algae, or who ingest water containing blue-green algae, may experience skin irritation, a rash, a sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, and potentially develop a fever, nausea and vomiting, or diarrhea. Symptoms usually appear within one to three hours and resolve in one to two days.“You can still boat in it, but you don’t want to swim where there are these obviously thick blooms of algae, and you want to keep your pets out of there,” added Kosugi.Residents living near the shores of lakes, as well as visitors and those making day-use of lakes, are advised to take the following precautions:Avoid all contact with blue-green algae blooms. If contact occurs, wash with tap water as soon as possible.Do not swim or wade (or allow your pets to swim or wade) in any areas where blue-green algae are visible. As a reminder, Northern Health recommends that visitors and residents do not drink or cook with untreated water directly from any lake at any time. Boiling lake water will not remove the toxins produced by blue-green algae. An alternate source of drinking water should also be provided for pets and livestock.  Pet owners should be wary of allowing pets to walk off-leash where they may be able to drink lake water – illnesses are a common outcome.Anyone who suspects a problem related to blue-green algae can connect with the Ministry of Environment at EnvironmentalComplaints@gov.bc.ca. 56 Delhiites think BJP will suffer losses due to postPulwama conduct CM

first_imgNEW DELHI: In an internal survey, the Aam Admi Party found out that in Delhi the conduct of BJP in the post-Pulwama situation had a negative effect among the citizens. Citing the results CM Arvind Kejriwal said that nearly 56 per cent of the Delhiites in the survey said that BJP will suffer due to such conduct. The survey also reportedly showed that people have accepted that the Congress preferred party politics over the country by refusing to have the alliance to avoid split in anti-BJP votes. Minority voters were in doubt earlier about the vote split, but the flat Congress refusal has helped the minorities in forming a clear opinion in favour of the AAP in Delhi. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “The people of Delhi have fully understood that BJP and Congress till today deceived them on full statehood despite having put it in their manifestoes for decades. It is only the AAP which is extremely sincere and serious on statehood for Delhi, therefore people are supporting the party.” Also Read – Bangla Sahib Gurudwara bans use of all types of plastic itemsThe survey reportedly observed that the Congress vote share would come down to less than 10 per cent which the party leaders have taken as a big blow to Congress. “The vote share of the Congress should get affected as they have chosen not to form an alliance. People wanted to see us together fighting against BJP but the Congress is now acting as BJP’s B team and people have realised that,” said a leader. On Monday the top leadership of AAP huddled into a meeting at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence to discuss preparations for Lok Sabha polls, on Monday, as a senior party leader claimed chances of party’s alliance are now nil. During the meeting, CM Kejriwal, the AAP national convener, asked party leaders to keep Lok Sabha campaign centred around the full statehood demand for Delhi, instead of getting into the question of the next prime minister of the country. Party MP Sanjay Singh, after the meeting, said “there are no chances of the alliance now,” when asked if the issue was discussed during the meeting. He said the party leaders discussed how to take the issue of full statehood to every home in Delhi in the run-up to voting in Delhi for seven Lok Sabha constituencies on May 12.last_img read more

Price of the good life

first_imgManual labour has become a thing of the past for most of us. This indicates better living, lesser wear and tear of the body and sometimes the mind, better use of our cerebral senses and diminishing psychological pressure of targets and deadlines. Nevertheless, the fatigue continues as there is constant pressure to excel and work harder to achieve the best of what life has to offer. In all this, what we tend to forget is the fact that the body goes through a deluge of ups and downs, owing to our sedentary lifestyle and lack of proper relaxation. A recent survey shows how visits to doctor clinics increased to 3.2 times a year in 2018, highlighting a rise in lifestyle ailments in India by almost 2.7 times compared to the previous year. Correspondingly, the sale of medicines has increased too. The first-ever mapping indicates most visits were to gynaecologists, dermatologists and paediatricians. This states that women and children’s issues demand more attention along with skin problems. The study also shows four out of 10 medicines ordered were to treat Vitamin D and calcium deficiencies, while two were for diabetes. Another research points out that sedentary lifestyle may be a risk factor for early mortality as well. For those who get the least amount of physical exercise, replacing half an hour of sitting time with physical activity was associated with up to nearly 50 per cent reduction in the mortality rate. The study suggested that replacing the modest amount of sitting time with even light physical activity may have the potential to reduce the risk of premature deaths among less active adults. Yet another analysis revealed that prolonged sedentary time significantly increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes, regardless of physical exercise. The health risk associated with prolonged sitting is not cancelled out by exercise. Further, the longer one sits, the higher the risk of chronic diseases. In some countries, employers are trying to come up with innovative and useful wellness strategies for their employees who form the core machinery of their organisations. Thus, the irony lies in the fact that we all work for better living but in the process, we cause much harm to our own body. People do travel to places in order to rejuvenate and keep their body and mind calm, relaxed and fresh but they tend to lead a sedentary lifestyle for days and months relentlessly, inflicting self-sabotage on something which they so dearly want to protect.last_img read more

Growth of 5 per cent in Indian jewellery demand to 125.4 tonne uplifted global demand and boosted retail sentiment. “The increase in auspicious wedding days during the quarter to 21 days from 8 in the same period of 2018 also played a crucial role in increase in demand,” WGC managing director, India, Somasundaram PR said here. Gold prices dropped to Rs 32,000 per 10 grams by the first week of March, he added. Also Read – Ashok Leyland stock tanks over 5 pc as co plans to suspend production for up to 15 daysAlso, he said, there was a jump in volume following stringent checking during the ongoing elections controlled the grey market, which benefitted the organised retail industry. “Smuggling has come down, however structurally nothing has changed. Unless some policy decision is taken like reducing the Customs Duty to a reasonable level the grey market will bounce back after the elections,” he added. Total jewellery demand in the first quarter was up by 5 per cent at 125.4 tonne compared to 119.2 tonne in the corresponding period of 2018. In value, jewellery demand grew by 13 per cent to Rs 37,070 crore against Rs 32,790 crore in the same quarter of 2018. In value terms, gold investment demand went up by 12 per cent to Rs 9,940 crore from Rs 8,890 crore in first quarter of 2018. The stronger rupee benefited investors, with demand for gold bars and coins in the first quarter, Somasundaram said. Total gold recycled in the country also grew by 14 per cent in the first quarter of 2019 to 16.1 tonne compared to 14.1 tonne in Q1 2018. Going forward, Somasundaram said, demand is likely to be boosted in second quarter due to traditional wedding season buying, the Akshaya Tritiya festival and rising crop prices. “In addition, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast of normal monsoon this year which augurs well for the rural economy and gold. The gold prices is also expected to remain attractive to boost consumer sentiment,” he added. Talking about import, Somasundaram said, the shipments into the country grew by 11 per cent to 175 tonne compared to 157 tonne in the same period of 2018. “Demand is likely to be more in the higher end of 750 to 850 tonne in 2019. But it may not be driven by imports. Further manufacturing will be way ahead of demand,” he added.last_img read more

Does psychology have a conflictofinterest problem

first_imgGeneration Z has made Jean Twenge a lot of money. As a psychologist at San Diego State University in California, she studies people born after the mid-1990s, the YouTube-obsessed group that spends much of its time on Instagram, Snapchat and other social-media platforms. Thanks to smartphones and sharing apps, Generation Z has grown up to be more narcissistic, anxious and depressed than older cohorts, she argues. Twenge calls them the ‘iGen’ generation, a name she says she coined. And in 2010, she started a business, iGen Consulting, “to advise companies and organizations on generational differences based on her expertise and research on the topic”. Twenge has “spoken at several large corporations including PepsiCo, McGraw-Hill, nGenera, Nielsen Media, and Bain Consulting”, one of her websites notes. She delivers anything from 20-minute briefings to half-day workshops, and is also available to speak to parents’ groups, non-profit organizations and educational establishments. In e-mail exchanges, she declined to say how much she earns from her advisory work, but fees for star psychologists can easily reach tens of thousands of dollars for a single speech, and possibly much more, several experts told Nature. Twenge’s academic papers don’t mention her paid speeches and consulting. Yet that stands in stark contrast to the conflict-of-interest (COI) guidelines issued by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), an influential organization whose standards have been widely adopted by many medical and some psychology journals. Those guidelines say that such ‘personal fees’ should be declared as potential COIs in research papers because readers should be made aware of any financial interests that they might perceive as potentially influencing the findings.center_img Twenge is not a lone outlier; an analysis for this article found that several well-known academic psychologists do paid speeches and consultancy work and don’t declare them in their research papers. Many editors and psychologists say that this is fine and is standard behaviour. They argue that this kind of income should not count as a COI and that psychology should not be held to the norms of medical science. “Speaking fees and consultancies would not be obvious conflicts of interest, unlike, say, evaluating a drug produced by a company in which one holds stock, since there would not seem to be incentives aligned with making one claim versus another,” says Steven Pinker, a well-known author and psychologist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who can also be booked for speaking engagements.
