Japanese Gov’t Provides US$68K Grant to LNRCS

first_imgThe Government of Japan has offered a grant of US$68K to the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS).The provision was made through Japanese Ambassador to Liberia, Kaorn Yoshimura, who is resident in Accra, Ghana. The fund is to be used through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGHSP).The GGHSP, since 2013, has supported the LNRCS and has provided funding to support the renovation and supplies for the LNRCS health facility, specifically the maternal and newborn facilities at the Red Cross headquarters. The signing ceremony took place Tuesday at the headquarters of the LNRCS in Monrovia. Ambassador Yoshimura signed on behalf of his government while the Secretary General of LNRCS, Fayiah Tamba, signed for LNRCS.The grant is intended to provide medical equipment and supplies for EVD control with its overall objective to contribute to the reduction of the mortality and morbidity related deaths in Liberia through awareness and messaging, social mobilization, and psycho-social support to those affected in Montserrado County.Targeted counties for intervention, according to officials of LNRCS, are Montserrado and Margibi Counties.Ambassador Yoshimura said his government wants to ensure that everything necessary is done to have the Ebola virus eradicated from the country and the sub-region. He noted that there are positive signs that the fight will definitely be won.He noted that the Japanese effort in the fight does not start with the signing of the grant, but rather the country, since the outbreak, has provided more than US$168M through international organizations that were involved in the fight. The Japanese Government also provided emergency relief goods worth millions of dollars to Liberia through the Japanese International Commission Agency (JICA). It also donated seven ambulances and 48 beds to the Liberian government. In December last year, the Japanese government donated Personal Protective Equipment worth thousands of dollars along with consumables to support Bong and Margibi Counties’ Ebola Case Management.Making remarks upon signing the agreement, the LNRCS SG Tamba noted that the grant is in the right direction, especially at a time when Liberia is in need of every support to finally defeat the virus. He said in the midst of the drastic decline of EVD infections, there is a need to remain vigilant at the community, country and regional levels to ensure that the virus is eliminated.Mr. Tamba said that the LNRCS volunteers are engaged in various thematic areas of social work in buttressing government’s efforts to end the epidemic and the signing of the grant was a great boost in that direction.“The LNRCS leads the fight against the EVD in terms of implementation at the national level, in which Japan has been very instrumental. All of these supports, coupled with those from other partners, are yielding the needed results and we are very grateful to God for this,” he said.He further disclosed that the LNRCS, in collaboration with other partners, concluded what he termed as the LNRCS recovery assessment. He noted that though the virus has virtually left the country, its impacts such as orphans, economic hardships and others, will continue to be felt.LNRCS Head of Program, Precious Dennis, said the Japanese Government’s support has always been timely, and highly appreciated by LNRCS.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Danny for many years graced his beloved Portsalon ‘’Banks’’, where he displayed his natural golfing ability. It was indeed our pleasure to have known him and to have such a local talent play on the ‘’Banks’’.Danny during his golfing career represented Portsalon Golf club throughout Donegal and Ulster in the various competitions. Over the past number of years we were deprived of his golfing talents as he had sustained an injury which prevented him from participating in the game he so loved. However, Danny always kept in close contact with his golfing friends at Portsalon and was always willing to share his opinion and to pass on his extensive knowledge of the golfing game to those in need of advice. The Portsalon Captain D P Logue, President Wm Mc Cleary and the members of Portsalon Golf Club would like to extend their deepest sympathy to Mary, Seamus, Dana and Pamela his brother and sisters on this sad occasion of Danny’s death. May Danny be reaping his eternal rewards on the fairways of heaven.
