From there, De la Cruz’s co-conspirators (four of whom have already been sentenced) would make international calls via the internet and he’d route them through the cloned phones — making the people whose information had been stolen foot the bills, according to the plea agreement.He admitted that his partners sent him around 2,158 numbers owned by US phone account holders between 2011 and 2013 and that he got tens of thousands of dollars from at least one Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) company for routing international calls, the DOJ noted.De la Cruz is a citizen of the Dominican Republic and was extradited from that country to face the charges. He was charged with three counts of fraud, two related to illegal telecom device use and one for identity theft. Also, representatives for the Event Horizon Telescope project reported that the group had conducted a joint venture to piece together the first image of a black hole—the team includes astronomers manning a large network of telescopes around the globe, each of whom aimed their sights on a chosen black hole for five nights in a row.In other news, a team at MIT announced that they had developed a device that pulls water from dry air powered only by the sun—even at conditions with just 20 percent humidity. Also, a team at the University of Zurich found that brain stimulation could influence honest behavior—by applying a small jolt of electricity to the brain, the team found they could make volunteers play more honestly in a die-rolling experiment. And a team at UC Berkeley made headlines by developing a shoe-string theory explaining why shoelaces come untied. And a team at the Institute for Integrative Nanosciences in Germany tested sperm as a possible candidate for delivering cancer medications in female patients—by affixing little helmets onto their heads.And finally, if you are someone who suffers from an increased sense of anxiety, you may want to read a report from a team at the University of Illinois. They found a link between brain structure, anxiety and negative bias in healthy adults—they discovered that volunteers with a relatively small inferior frontal cortex were more likely to suffer from anxiety. Pixars CoFounders Heard No 45 Times Before Steve Jobs Said Yes

If its back catalogue isn’t impressive enough, Pixar has now given its fans what is arguably its most sacred creation of all — the secret of how to tell tales that make people tick.I interviewed Alvy Ray Smith, one of the company’s co-founders, and he told me about learning animation from a $1.50 “how-to” book, the role that “Moore’s Law” played in guiding him to success with Pixar, his three golden rules of recruitment and working with the late Steve Jobs.In addition to pursuing computer graphics at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), you taught yourself the basics of animation using a $1.50 “how-to” book written by the late Preston Blair, a character animator best known for his work at Disney and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Where did you get your business savvy from?Alvy Ray Smith: My co-founder, Edwin Catmull, and I were the academic type. We were computer nerds with PhDs and learned business by the seat of our pants. When George Lucas — one of our patrons — lost half his fortune in a divorce, we were forced to start a company to preserve our group. Our first move was to buy four “how-to-start-a-business” books. I also called a former colleague at NYIT, Jim Clark, founder of Silicon Graphics (and later, Netscape) and asked him how to do business. He said, “It’s not hard, Alvy. It’ll take you about a year to learn the basics.” That was the extent of our “formal” training. Then, we went through an intense learning process made necessary by financing Pixar. Moore — the founder of Intel — had on your business philosophy.In my own words, “Moore’s Law” says, “Everything good about computers gets better by a factor of 10 every five years.” So, in 2015, computers were 10 billion times better than they were in 1965. Catmull and I used this “Law” at several crucial points, including the formation of Pixar. In the final year at Lucasfilm, I ran the numbers for a contract with a Japanese company ready to produce the first digital movie. To my horror, I discovered that computers hadn’t arrived yet — by a factor of 10. I had to back out of the deal. Hence, we knew that Pixar couldn’t make movies for another five years. At the end of those five fraught years — right on Moore’s Law schedule — Disney stepped forward to finance Toy Story, the first digital movie.What positives did you take away from your association with the late Steve Jobs, who was the main investor in Pixar?Jobs financed us when 45 other organizations had said “no.” He didn’t create or run Pixar, but he did capitalize us as a manufacturing company for those first five years. We ran out of money several times, and Jobs would always write us another check in exchange for equity. Catmull and I aren’t good entrepreneurial models because we failed for five years, staying alive only because of one of our patrons, Steve Jobs. We weren’t successful until we were executing a business that we had truly prepared for, which was making animated movies. What we did have going for us was a clear and clean vision — that is, to make the first digital movie. It was not to make a financially successful company. The productivity and project management market is booming, and it’s continuing to evolve in new and exciting ways. I wanted to know what the future of artificial intelligence in project management would look like, so I reached out to founders, productivity experts and futurists who work in this space every day to ask what their predictions are for the next five and 10 years. Their answers were enlightening.We’ll use AI for decision support, not decision making.David Allen, the inventor of Getting Things Done, believes, ”Systems will get better at presenting the relevant data to optimize our experience in every situation — at the right place, at the right time. We need to think of productivity systems as supporting systems for our decision process.”Related: How to Prepare Employees to Work With AISo, we won’t yet be using AI to eliminate our decisions and automate them, but to enhance the ability to make a decision in any situation. I also think this is the next likely step for AI. Most people wouldn’t trust a computer to make decisions for them, but they do look for information to help make those decisions.Allen goes on to say, “Neither these new presentation forms nor trends like A.I. will make a decision for you. That won’t work. I see that A.I. can support your decisions but we still will use our heads to make decisions.”It’s not robots . . .When most people think of AI, they think of robots doing manual labor to get things done for us, whether it’s Rosie from The Jetsons or a robot on the assembly line at Ford. The issue I have with this is that this view is too limiting. Sure, robots will become intelligent, but so will everything else. The team behind the online video series In a Nutshell released a great explainer video about this.Right now, an app that will be able to recognize your motivation level and give you tasks that fit that level is not out of the question. Bots that can answer simple service questions and learn from the responses are already around, working with some success and some big failures.Related: Rethinking Chatbots: They’re Not Just for CustomersMark Mader, CEO at Smartsheet, thinks that thinking of AI as roving robots is missing the point, saying, “Looking further out, there’s no doubt that automation — don’t think robots, think removing mundane and unproductive work steps from your day — will increase. Machine learning will be able to predict what workers are trying to do and make their work easier. How? By automatically gathering the information they need to complete a task, populating forms and sharing them with the appropriate people.”I see a combination of both. Specifically in project management, I see a future where machines will be able to predict a change using real-time data and make changes accordingly. It’s the combination of bots and machine learning that holds the key: Think of an assembly line system pushing out barbecue equipment. The system will be able to predict that demand will increase due to an upcoming holiday and automatically tell the bots on the line to increase production. I’m not sure if there will be a human decision between them, but I think as we become more comfortable with the machines’ decisions, we’ll give them more control of the process.It’s my decision to make.AI is far from being human, let alone superhuman. As I pointed out, we’ve released machine learning bots with some pretty terrible results. Machines are not yet good at understanding context or sarcasm, so when we let them learn, they usually miss the mark.Using machines to help with a decision, however, seems like the only way forward for the moment. As a form of decision support, productivity expert Carl Pullein thinks that “machine learning and artificial intelligence [will move] towards creating productivity tools that can schedule your meetings and tasks for you and to be able to know what needs to be done based on your context, where you are and what needs to be done.”Related: Why Small Business Should Be Paying Attention to Artificial IntelligenceMachine learning enabled tools like Grammarly are already on the market, but as these decision-making aides become more well-known, they are moving into more complex areas. Think of it as your Facebook timeline algorithm or your spam filter, but for your to-do list.Just like education, access is the key to machine learning.To get a sense of where we are now, think of systems that are on and learning all of the time. Your computer browser talks to Google and Facebook and any number of companies, where what you’re doing, clicking, buying and beyond, is stored. Now with the recent trend of IoT, these things are moving away from our computers and cellphones and becoming part of our everyday lives. And gaining access to data along the way. Your smart fridge might be able to tell the local supermarket how much water you drink per week. If everyone in the local area has a smart fridge, that same supermarket would be able to make a better decision about how much water to keep stocked.Productivity psychologist Melissa Gratias sees this system working for us in our workplaces too. “Most apps and programs require the user to purposefully interface with the tool in order to use it. We will see more smart homes, smart cars and voice-activated entry points that allow the tool to be always available to the user, no matter where she is. She won’t have to stop what she’s doing to, for example, add something to her task list.”Related: Will a Robot Take My Job?So, not only will the supermarket know what to stock, but your fridge will know what to add to your shopping list for the next week. Automatically, through learned behavior.All the experts I spoke with agreed that decision support is likely the only way forward in the short term. Machines are being taught the decision preferences of humans, because they can’t discern context on their own. So, we need to educate machines on what it’s like to think like a human. Companies like Alphabet are already working on it, with projects like DeepMind at the forefront of AI and machine learning technologies. Others, like Elon Musk’s OpenAI, are working to make sure that humanity’s fears of a malevolent AI will never be realized. As we learn to trust these systems, adoption will quickly follow. Dubbed Canine, the device improves the user’s spacial self-awareness, which subsequently improves walking stability.According to the team, some 35 percent of people aged 75 to 80 years suffer some form of mobility impairment (compared to four percent of people aged 18 to 49), and this number is only going to increase. Currently, the ratio of young to old is around seven or eight to one, but this is expected to reduce to around five to one by 2050. Hence the need for better, smarter assistive technology. Smart canes have been developed before, but most tend to be about improving environmental sensors for sight-impaired users, or measuring the physical recovery of patients based on how much pressure they apply as they walk with the cane. And while the cane may be an obvious metaphor for this device, in fact, it’s more like the friendly, sturdy hand of a human assistant, gently helping someone who, while mobile, might not be particularly stable on their feet. The offer of a gentle hand with a light, guiding touch is precisely what the Canine robot promises. The device is made up of a mobile robotic base, which tracks the user using LiDAR as it rolls alongside, and a robotic cane which senses and responds to both the user and the information from the base unit, giving subtle feedback through the handle.To train the device, the test subjects – 12 healthy young volunteers – walked along a mat kitted out with sensors, while they wore a virtual reality headset which fed them mediolateral visual perturbations, (messed with their perception of their environment) and subsequently interfered with their gait. The test subjects walked the course with and without the Canine device, and the data gathered showed their gait stability improved significantly when they had the light-touch assistance of the robotic cane. “The next phase in our research will be to test this device on elderly individuals and those with balance and gait deficits to study how the robotic cane can improve their gait,” says Professor Sunil Agrawal, director of the Robotics and Rehabilitation Laboratory, who led the research team. “In addition, we will conduct new experiments with healthy individuals, where we will perturb their head-neck motion in addition to their vision to simulate vestibular deficits in people.”Agrawal and his colleagues are hopeful that the technology behind the Canine robot could one day offer a reasonably inexpensive solution to a much needed – and growing – gap in care.
