first_imgTorino coach Mazzarri: Blame me for Lecce lossby Carlos Volcanoa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveTorino coach Walter Mazzarri was left frustrated after defeat to Lecce. However, he insists he was to blame for the 2-1 loss.Mazzarri said, “I want to apologise to the fans, as they were exceptional despite this being our worst performance for a very long time.“We got almost everything wrong tonight. The internationals arrived late, but playing on Monday we even had an extra day compared to most others, so maybe I just got things wrong in training.“We had too many players who were sluggish and lost, they looked like the bad brothers of the players who beat Atalanta. I saw at least four who just weren’t themselves, so that must be my fault, as I was unable to motivate or focus them.“Aside from possession, which at 2 miles per hour is futile anyway, we got nothing right. We didn’t even put in decent crosses other than from corners.“We had to concentrate on what we’ve always done well and we didn’t. If you look at their first goal, it’s inexplicable. You cannot concede a goal like that.“Last season, we were constantly pinning opponents back and then at times incidents didn’t go our way, including VAR interpretations. Tonight, Lecce looked capable of scoring a third or fourth goal.” About the authorCarlos VolcanoShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Islamic State claims Sri Lanka carnage toll is 321

first_imgColombo: The Islamic State on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the suicide bombings targeting churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka as the death toll in the Easter Sunday bloodbath touched 321, including 10 Indians, with over 500 injured. The Islamic State’s claim came as the country held a mass funeral for some of the victims at a sprawling grave near the St Sebastian’s Church in Negombo, around 40 km north of Colombo, where mourners struggled to hold back their tears. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details An Arabic language statement on the group’s official al-Amaq news agency made the claim on the encrypted messaging app, saying the suicide bombers were “fighters of the Islamic State”. “The perpetrators of the attack that targeted nationals of the crusader alliance (anti-IS US-led coalition) and Christians in Sri Lanka were Islamic State fighters,” the brief message said. Tuesday’s statement came after an unconfirmed video posted to social media by an affiliated group suggested that the Islamic State was behind the Easter horror. That video showed photos of three of the alleged suicide bombers. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday The men, who are described as “assailants” rather than the more common “martyrs”, were named as Abul Barra, Abul Mukhtar and Abu Ubaida and featured in front of a black IS flag giving the one-finger salute, the news.com of Australia said. Authorities have so far named a Sri Lankan Muslim group, the National Thowheed Jamath (NJT), for the bombings but said the mayhem would not have been possible minus international support. Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene said the Easter attacks were a “retaliation” for last month’s Christchurch mosque shooting that left 50 Muslims dead and were blamed on a white supermacist from Australia. The Minister put the latest death toll in Sri Lanka at 321. The Islamic State’s and the Defence Minister’s claim give an international dimension to the Sunday carnage that killed mostly Sri Lankans but also some 35 foreigners, including from the US and other Western countries as well as 10 Indians. The Indian High Commission said that with the death of two more Indians, the Indian death toll had risen to 10. Also on Tuesday, Sri Lanka observed a day of national mourning, with the national flags on public buildings flying at half mast. The mourning started at 8.45 a.m. to coincide with the start of the deadly attacks on Easter worshipers at churches and guests at hotels in three Sri Lankan cities. Three minutes of silence were observed across Sri Lanka to honour the dead. The police have detained 40 suspects in connection with the attacks. Reports said they include a Syrian who was caught after the interrogation of local suspects. The government has suggested that seven suicide bombers were involved in the bombings. A CCTV video showed one of them, a young man wearing a sky blue shirt and jeans and carrying a backpack, casually walking into an Easter congregation in a church where he blew himself up. The series of attacks on Sunday began with six nearly simultaneous explosions targeting three luxury hotels in Colombo and three churches – one in Colombo, another in Negombo and the third in the Tamil-majority Batticaloa town in the island’s east. Hours later, a seventh blast took place in a small hotel near the Colombo zoo killing two persons. The last of the bombings occurred when police raided a residential complex in Dematagoda, a neighbourhood in Colombo, but a terrorist detonated himself killing three policemen and also the wife and sister of one of the suicide bombers. Sunday was the deadliest day in the country since the end of a civil war between Tamil Tigers and government forces that began in 1983 and ended in 2009. Meanwhile, police in Colombo issued an alert that a van or truck carrying explosives may be in Colombo following which security was stepped up at government buildings and police stations.last_img read more

Ohio State womens basketball wins season opener

For the 17th consecutive year, the Ohio State women’s basketball team opened its season with a victory as the Buckeyes knocked off Tennessee State, 78-51, Sunday at the Schottenstein Center. Ten players scored for the Buckeyes, with senior guard Samantha Prahalis and junior guard Tayler Hill leading the way with 17 points each. Freshman forward Kalpana Beach, in her first-ever game for OSU, contributed 10 points and six rebounds. Beach said she found out just before the game that she was starting. “I knew it was going to be a lot different than high school,” Beach said. “So I just was going to go out and play as hard as I could and try not to make too many mistakes.” “(Beach) was nervous before the game,” Hill said with a smile following the victory. OSU surged out to a 48-21 halftime lead, holding TSU to 30 percent shooting in the first half and not allowing any second-chance or fast-break points. The Tigers kept pace with the Buckeyes during the second half with both teams notching 30 points. Coach Jim Foster attributed the drop in production in the second half to inconsistent offensive play. “I thought we started the game very aggressively,” Foster said. “I think it’s difficult to play 12 people and continue with continuity on offense. I think that’s probably what showed in the second half.” With Prahalis as the lone senior to go along with three juniors on the roster, OSU is the youngest team in the Big Ten, according to NCAA data. Foster said the early games in the season are vital in the development of the younger players. “I think one of the things that a young team needs to learn is that when you come in at halftime and sit down you’ve got to continue to be engaged when you go out there for the second half, regardless of what the score is,” Foster said. For the game, the Buckeyes shot 48 percent from the field to go along with a 23-for-29 clip from the free-throw line. OSU held a decisive advantage in free-throw attempts, with TSU only generating nine attempts from the line. OSU suffered a bit of a scare late in the second half when Prahalis, voted co-Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year by the conference’s coaches, was helped off the court by trainers when she fell and cramped up. Prahalis returned to action a few minutes later to finish the contest and assured reporters following the game that she was fine. The Buckeyes take to the Schottenstein Center court again to play Temple at 6 p.m. on Friday. OSU defeated the Owls, 84-75, on the road last season. read more

Football Ohio State defensive line setting the bar high

Ohio State defensive linemen look on during the second half of the Buckeyes game against Nebraska on Nov. 5. The Buckeyes won 62-3. Credit: Alexa Mavrogianis | Photo EditorThe Ohio State football team has a fully loaded defensive line ready to not only control the line of scrimmage, but also dominate it.“We’ll be as good as anybody in America at defensive end,” Coach Urban Meyer said.Meyer referenced Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, redshirt senior Tyquan Lewis, redshirt junior Sam Hubbard, sophomore Nick Bosa, senior Jalyn Holmes and redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones as the five premier defensive linemen on the team. With such high-profile players returning who have already played significant snaps, a concern is the possibility of complacency. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case for this unit. Lewis said the goal is to be the best defensive line all-time. “We’re all elite players, so we continue to push one another to the next level,” he said. “That’s what helps us become better and better — it’s a lot of competition between all of us.”Defensive line coach Larry Johnson said this unit is the best collective group he has had in a long time. He emphasized the closeness of this group by citing the collective bond and love that they share. He said Lewis and Holmes demonstrated this bond by forgoing the NFL Draft to return for their senior seasons. “The most important thing about these guys (is) they’re unselfish — they’re very unselfish players,” Johnson said. “They don’t care who starts, they don’t care who plays, as long as they play.”Honorable mention All-Big Ten defensive end Holmes said that the guys on the defensive line do not want to let each other down. He continually emphasized that winning is much more important than playing time. “We have that bond and we got that chemistry, Holmes said. “And we (are) playing for something bigger than ourselves.”Johnson referred to the depth of the defensive line and mentioned the improvements he has seen in redshirt sophomore defensive end Rashod Berry, sophomore defensive tackle Robert Landers, redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Jashon Cornell, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Malik Barrow, sophomore defensive end Jonathon Cooper and Honorable Mention All-Big Ten, redshirt senior Michael Hill. Honorable Mention All-Big Ten defensive end Hubbard played with former Buckeye defensive linemen Joey Bosa and Adolphus Washington, who both started as rookies in the NFL this past season. He said that this current defensive line could be even better as a whole.“I’ve played with a lot of great individuals. I don’t think, collectively, there’s been this much talent at his position since I’ve been here,” Hubbard said. “We have four guys who could start on any team in the country and we’re all playing together.”Along with Jones, Meyer said the staff has been thinking of ways of putting the five premier linemen on the field at one time, which would move a defensive end to linebacker. Per Johnson and multiple players, Hubbard has been practicing at the position during spring practice. Nick Bosa also emphasized the importance of getting all of the talent involved.“We have so many good players,” Bosa said. “It’s criminal to not have them on the field.” read more

8yearold Tech Mogul Theres an App for That

first_img 2 min read This story appears in the September 2010 issue of . Subscribe » August 23, 2010 Joseph Hudicka needs to make about $999,500 more before he can claim the title of young millionaire, but he’s still light-years ahead of his peers in terms of entrepreneurial success. At the age of 8, Joseph has already joined the ranks of the tech elite: He has developed two applications for the iPhone. Pretty good for a kid who doesn’t even own a mobile phone.Joseph’s first app, Puckz, went on sale in Apple’s App Store in March. The game, which combines elements of chess and ice hockey, evolved from a homemade board game Joseph created three years earlier.”I was getting bored with my other games and wanted to make my own,” he says. The explosive growth of mobile gaming inspired Joseph and his parents, Joseph Sr. and Lora, who live in Flemington, N.J., to translate Puckz to the iPhone platform, tapping mobile solutions partner [x]cube Labs to oversee the software development. Joseph supervised the creative process, suggesting color schemes, layouts and sound effects. And like every creative genius, he laments the technical limitations of the iPhone gaming experience. “I imagined Puckz in 3-D,” he says.Puckz successfully avoided the pitfalls of the notoriously labyrinthine App Store submission process, earning Apple’s approval in just one day. Joseph’s soccer-themed follow-up app, Goalz, spent several weeks in administrative limbo when Apple objected to its use of licensed trademarks. Even after Joseph removed the offending content, Apple still took its sweet time before lending its official endorsement in June. (Joseph’s theory: “Maybe they slept in late and forgot about my app.”)As of the end of June, downloads of Joseph’s two apps numbered nearly 800. After giving Apple its cut, he has netted $489. Joseph’s parents gave him permission to buy an iPhone when his app sales reach the 1,000-download milestone.Despite his early success in the tech world, it may be premature to pin Joseph as a budding entrepreneur. Right now, he’s planning to make his mark as a professional hockey player–or maybe a pro bowler. Either way, life as a software magnate may not be in the cards, because, Joseph says, “I’ve already done that.” Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Last week as Cyprus deliberated on the details of

first_imgLast week, as Cyprus deliberated on the details of bank levies on deposits in the country (essentially state-approved theft), I discussed the potential Russian influence on such a deal. We saw that Russia was looking to make deals in Cyprus that would give it more control over natural-gas supplies in the Mediterranean, which in turn continues Putin’s dominance of the European energy scene. To counter this, European nations are beginning to look within their own borders for their energy needs: oil, natural gas, coal, and uranium. Every bit of energy that they can produce domestically means energy that does need to be imported from Russia. Considering the fact that Russia has shown that it is willing to shut off all natural-gas flow to Europe if it doesn’t get its way, it is a good idea for Europe to start turning on the drills. It is also no secret that Europe needs more jobs for its people. With unemployment in the Eurozone reaching 12% and youth unemployment almost 25%, governments are also desperate to find ways to keep their population productive instead of protesting in the streets. The oil and gas sector represents an industry that could potentially lend a helping hand by employing thousands of people. We firmly believe that we are in the middle of an European Energy Renaissance. Governments of Europe will begin to open up their countries to more oil and gas exploration. Regulations will be relaxed. Energy taxes will be reduced. And investors in the right companies will profit greatly. When we were the first to write about the shale potential in Europe back in 2008 and recommended the first energy company to drill an economic shale well in Europe, our subscribers were able to net a 720% return on their investments. And we believe that we have a company in our portfolio that is just as good: a junior exploration company that is sitting in the heart of Europe. By applying new technology to old fields and old wells, it may very well be sitting on the next Bakken. In our Casey Energy Report, we will also be doing a report of the energy situation in Europe to look for further opportunities for profit just like this in the near future. So ask yourselves this: Are you content with sitting in the Old World, mocking every profitable ship that passes you by? Or are you ready to set sail and explore this New World of energy with us? But just where is the natural gas, and how much can realistically be recovered? This article outlines the basics of Cyprus’ natural-gas wealth. It is clear that such a development would change Cyprus forever… but can Cyprus last until then? New Nuclear Power Station Gets Planning Consent (Guardian) Though countries may say they are looking for alternative ways to generate electricity, the truth is that nuclear is still the best near-term solution for a base-load power that does not require fossil fuels. The United Kingdom has approved the first nuclear power plant in the past 18 years, and it will be one of the largest power plants in the UK, powering up to 5 million homes. We expect to see more countries join in the nuclear rush to solve the electricity needs of growing populations. Even in Bankruptcy, China’s Suntech Exacerbating Solar Glut (Financial Post) Suntech Power Holdings became the latest and largest casualty of the solar industry recently, as it is now clear that government subsidies are essential to keep it afloat. As the Chinese government began to pull back on its subsidies, the company began to struggle in a market that is faced with lower solar-panel prices due to a glut of products. In fact, it is said that the company lost $1 for every $3 of sales, meaning that it was bleeding money every single day. Could this happen to other solar companies? Definitely.last_img read more

A loud noise of something crashing is then heard. The recording is understood to have come from a neighbor Mr Tom Penn, who captured the argument which took place in the early hours of Friday.  Following screams are numerous sounds of ‘slamming and banging.’Symonds who is understood to a former director of communications for the Conservative party, is reported to have accused Johnson of being spoiled and having no regard for money.Speaking to the Guardian, Penn said that once he had determined ‘no one was harmed,’ he felt compelled to contact the paper and share the recording. He said it was in the public interest.‘I believe it is reasonable for someone who is likely to become our next prime minister to be held accountable for all of their words, actions and behaviours. I, along with a lot of my neighbours all across London, voted to remain within the EU. That is the extent of my involvement in politics,’ Penn said.Pressed for responseAt the hustings event, Johnson was asked a number of times for a response on the incident to which the MP dodged the question. After presenter Iain Dale accused Johnson of dodging, Johnson said that he was happy to be asked about what he wanted to do about the country.‘You are running for the office of not just Conservative Party leader, but prime minister, so a lot of people who admire your politics do call into question your character, and it is incumbent on you to answer that question,’ Dale said.A few more times followed with Johnson finally saying that he would not be commenting further on the subject. This was the first of 16 hustings in which the two remaining candidates Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt are hoping to replace former leader of the Conservative Party Theresa May.WhatsApp SharePrintlast_img read more
