Galaxy Fold was rushed Samsungs next move matters most

first_img 36 Photos Android Update TCL’s DragonHinge lets phones bend and fold Mobile Tablets Phones Foldable Phones The key to making phones stronger is bendable glass, which won’t be ready for a few years. CNET got an exclusive look at Corning’s bendable glass, which, even if fragile, is still expected to offer a degree of protection over the Galaxy Fold and Mate X’s plastic screens.Observers were mostly concerned about the “ugly” crease you see when you unbend a foldable phone into its full-screen mode, and if this could lead to wear and tear over hundreds of thousands of bends. The crease either appears as a ridge or a valley depending on if the larger screen unfolds on the inside or outside of the device. For example, the Galaxy Fold opens like a book to reveal an interior 7.3-inch display, where the Mate X’s 8-inch screen acts more like the book cover that wraps around the outside of the frame.A plastic screen prone to scratches on its softer surface was another issue, especially for outward-bending models like the Mate X, where more of the delicate screen is exposed. 60 Photos The future of foldable phones is murky even now. Angela Lang/CNET Note: Samsung has announced it will relaunch the Galaxy Fold in September.Even before Samsung’s mobile chief, DJ Koh, admitted that he “pushed [the Fold] through before it was ready”, massive delays to the first major foldable phone slammed the brakes on what was once billed as nothing short of a phone revolution. In the 67 days since the Galaxy Fold was initially slated to sell on April 26, Samsung’s admission (some may say it stops short of a full apology) adds heft to fears that the foldable phones, which are part phone, part tablet, are more gimmick than revelatory gadget. What happens next is crucial to Samsung’s foldable future, and could help or hurt the chances of unreleased foldable devices from other brands.Foldable phones have been heralded as the next big thing because of their ability to double the device’s display size with a large, bendable screen. They also aim to shake up design at a time when phone sales have waned amid lackluster upgrades. Samsung (and Huawei) wanted their Galaxy Fold (and Mate X) to prove how exciting and successful a foldable phone could be. But after the screens on some reviewers’ test phones kept breaking (ours didn’t), Samsung delayed the Fold. With only a mea culpa from Koh and not a whisper of a new release window for the Galaxy Fold, there’s no telling if Samsung will be able to recapture the energy it inspired at the Galaxy Fold’s flashy launch Feb. 20. Anyone who cares about the fate of foldable phones is suspended in Galaxy Fold limbo.”I do admit I missed something on the foldable phone, but we are in the process of recovery,” Koh told The Independent during an interview in Seoul. For its part, Samsung might well be shifting gears to announce the Galaxy Note 10 at its next Unpacked launch event in New York on Aug. 7. Perhaps we’ll hear more about the Galaxy Fold then. 10:12 0 Mate X foldable phone: Here’s what it’s really like to use null Share your voice In the Galaxy Fold’s case, where Gorilla Glass protects the interior screen when the phone is closed, I still noticed indentations and scratches on the plastic cover material after just seven days. Some of the Fold’s issues arose because reviewers peeled off a protective layer that wasn’t intended to come off, which made the phone immediately stop working. Samsung has reportedly fixed these problems but hasn’t shared when it plans to put the Galaxy Fold on sale. What about the US ban against Huawei? Some have wondered if the US government’s move to blacklist Huawei from its US partners plays a role in the Mate X’s launch date. For example, Huawei has been cut off from any US-based business supplying software (e.g. Android), components and even consulting services across all of Huawei’s businesses.Although the ban received a temporary reprieve that allows Huawei to support current products, followed by a further easing of restrictions, it’s uncertain if the Mate X will be able to access every component and scrap of software it needs to compete against the Galaxy Fold. The Mate X was announced before President Trump signed the executive order against Huawei, but has never received a firm release date. If Huawei needs Google’s support for foldable phones and Android apps to sell the Mate X outside of China, that could certainly influence its decision to wait. The Wall Street Journal reported that sourcing parts wasn’t an issue, according to Huawei SVP Vincent Peng, but that Huawei and Google are still discussing the license over Android apps.Android Q supports foldable phones. Google Don’t give up on foldable phones yetIt’s too soon to declare foldable phones dead. Samsung and Huawei still plan to launch an improved Galaxy Fold and the Mate X, respectively, and Google declared support for foldable designs in May at its annual Google I/O conference for developers. That means app makers are already optimizing their software to work on foldable phones. While off to a sputtering start, these companies have invested millions into foldable designs. It’s a gamble that they’re counting on to pay off in the long run.Other phone brands also have foldable plans. Apple, LG, TCL and Oppo have either filed patent applications for foldable designs or announced that they’re already at work. Rumors are ripe for a foldable Moto Razr comeback design that will modernize the beloved flip phone. Google Huawei Samsung Our Galaxy Fold didn’t break. Here’s what’s good and… Samsung isn’t the only brand allegedly wrapped up in foldable phone delays. Huawei is said to have delayed its own foldable Mate X to “improve” the screen, the Wall Street Journal reported, though there’s some question over whether Huawei slated the Mate X for “June” or for “summer”, which officially ends September 21, in the northern hemisphere.Samsung and Huawei are currently the world’s largest and second-largest phone brands, respectively. All eyes are on them. Cancel sales and other phone-makers could also scuttle their plans in the hopes of dodging poor sales and public ridicule. Launch the phones late, but without issue, and careful rivals may be encouraged to introduce foldable phones, too. How well these devices do when they come into buyers’ hands may decide whether foldable phone designs ultimately fail or succeed. Samsung and Huawei declined to comment on this story.huawei-mate-x-hands-on-mwc-2019-19The Mate X’s screen bends outward, which means the plastic display covers the exterior of the phone frame. Andrew Hoyle/CNET Plastic is a problem, but bendable glass is years awayFrom the very beginning, phone-watchers remarked that the Galaxy Fold and Mate X’s foldable plastic screens could be their very undoing. Because who wants to spend $2,000 or more on a scratch-prone phone?Right now, foldable phone have to use a bendable flexible plastic screen, which make them especially vulnerable to nicks and gouges, pressure damage and bulges formed by debris tunneling under the display. Samsung’s screen issues don’t come as a total surprise. The brands only showed off their foldable phones briefly, unlike virtually every other models that see much more time in reviewers’ hands before the final review unit appears. We used the Mate X for about five minutes in March and first touched the Galaxy Fold moments before we received our review unit in April. The phone-makers’ elusive attitude was a strong tip-off that the foldable devices weren’t ready for prime time. Close up with the Galaxy Fold screen, notch and hinge 20 Photos Now playing: Watch this: Tags Apple often waits years after a category is established — think smartphone or smartwatch — before coming in with a fully polished product. The very first foldable phone models were always going to be niche, beta-style devices for bleeding-edge adopters, models that reveal the strengths and weaknesses of a brand-new design ethos that their makers could then fine-tune down the line. Samsung and Huawei aimed to score the first points and force rivals to follow suit. But if competitors are learning any lesson, it’s to slow down and get their foldable designs right. Hopefully Samsung and Huawei are taking note, too.Posted June 15 at 5 a.m. PT. GST impact subdued business activity push Nifty below 9900 Sensex drops around

first_imgA man looks at a screen across the road on the facade of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) building in Mumbai May 16, 2014.Reuters fileThe Indian equity market is witnessing a mild downturn, with the benchmark index declining for the fifth straight day to a near four-week low. The BSE Sensex on Monday tanked 417 points intraday before closing at 31,626.63, down 296 points. On the other hand, NSE Nifty 50 Index slipped 91 percent or 0.92 percent to 9,872.60.The NSE Nifty Bank index fell for the fifth day in a row and hit a 1-month low on Monday, declining as much as 1.45 percent to touch 24,015 points. The corrections have been triggered by a series of factors such as GST impact on domestic market, subdued consumer spending, weak global cues, continues FPI outflows, muted growth forecast and because of growing global uncertainties.”Clearly both the initiatives (GST and demonetisation) had a more severe impact than what we have imagined. The negative impact is more in wholesale businesses in rural areas along with small and medium-sized industries. And, this is worrying,” Harsh Mariwala chairman of Marico told BloombergQuint.Recently, R Shankar Raman, chief financial officer (CFO) of Larsen and Toubro (L&T), opined that the government’s preparedness for rolling out tax reforms was nowhere close to what was claimed and this found reflection in the slipping GDP growth numbers. In an interview with Mint last week, Raman said, “…this pain is going to continue for another six to nine months, and consequently, working capital is going to get blocked. In fact, I don’t see the private sector coming back for the next couple of years.”On the global front, uncertainties keep putting pressure on emerging stock markets. The US Fed’s hawkish monetary policy stance and decision to begin its balance-sheet reduction programme from October 2017, a sharp depreciation in the rupee over the past two weeks and increasing tensions in the Korean peninsula are pushing investors away from the market.Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have been net sellers form the past two months. As on September 25, they pulled Rs 4,511 crore out of the Indian equity market and in August they pulled out a whopping Rs 12,770 crore, according to NSDL data.last_img read more

No barrier to probe atrocities against Rohingyas ICC team

first_imgRohingya refugee carries an elderly man at the Palongkhali refugee camp near Cox`s Bazar. Reuters file photoThe Office of the Prosecutor, International Criminal Court (ICC) does not see any barrier in carrying out “preliminary examination” and subsequent investigation into alleged atrocities committed against Rohingyas by the Myanmar military though Myanmar is not a State Party to the Rome Statute, reports UNB.”The ICC process is not about Myanmar, it’s not about Myanmar as a state. It’s about individual’s criminal responsibility,” ICC’s director of Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division Phakiso Mochochoko told reporters at a city hotel on Monday evening. The delegation from the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is set to leave Dhaka on Tuesday.Explaining further about individual criminal responsibility, he said it is all about the people who are responsible, who have given instructions, who have commanded and the people who did all other things and facilitated to commit these alleged crimes.Mochochoko said it will not in any way be a hindrance despite the fact that Myanmar is not a State Party and will not cooperate with the Office of the Prosecutor into this.Expecting cooperation from everyone, he said Myanmar’s noncooperation might present a little bit of challenge for them in terms of investigation but there is no barrier to go ahead without cooperation from Myanmar.Mochochoko said this is not the first time they engaged in this kind of process but they had got many other situations where they had been engaged. “Almost all of them have come to fruition – in one way or another.”He said the independent and impartial preliminary examination of the situation in Bangladesh/Myanmar is going on and will follow its course.”A preliminary examination is not an investigation, but an assessment of the Rome Statute criteria to decide whether an investigation into the situation at hand is warranted,” he said. Therefore, during their Bangladesh mission that ended on Monday, he said the delegation did not collect any evidence or perform any other investigative activities as it is the standard practice of the Office.Meanwhile, they had interactions with relevant ministers and meetings with representatives of international organisations, and visited Rohingya camps.Earlier, the ICC wanted to know Bangladesh’s opinion on whether The Hague-based court has the jurisdiction to run a case on atrocities against Rohingyas. The pretrial chamber of the ICC sent a letter to Bangladesh in this regard on 7 May 2018 seeking opinion on three specific matters by June 11, either publicly or confidentially.Bangladesh responded to the request of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Rohingya issue, as the country is seeking a “sustainable solution” to the crisis.last_img

Bathroom Bill Fight Brewing In Texas

first_img Share Eric Gay/APThe dome of the Texas State Capital.Texas could soon follow in the footsteps of Indiana and North Carolina and pass its own “bathroom bill” in the upcoming legislative session. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has made passage of such a bill, which could require transgender Texans to use the restroom which corresponds to the gender on their birth certificate, a priority. The proposal threatens to split the Texas Republican Party, which controls all three branches of government in Austin. Proponents include the lieutenant governor and the Senate he leads, while the Texas House of Representatives is more sympathetic to the state’s business community. The politically powerful chamber of commerce and the Texas Association of Business both strongly oppose any bathroom bill.North Carolina’s bathroom bill nullified legislation passed by the city of Charlotte that expanded protections to LGBT North Carolinians. The state’s bathroom bill also prohibited transgender people from using public restrooms that align with their gender identity. It provoked a widespread backlash from businesses, entertainers, sports organizations and the movie industry. The NBA pulled its All-Star Game out of North Carolina, the NCAA moved March Madness regional games out of the state, and PayPal and Deutsche Bank suspended planned expansions there. Forbes estimated that North Carolina lost more than $600 million in the six months after Gov. Pat McCrory signed the legislation into a law. McCrory was subsequently defeated in his bid for re-election in November by Democrat Roy Cooper, who made the bathroom bill a cornerstone of his campaign.None of these economic and political ramifications have deterred the Texas lieutenant governor. In fact, when the North Carolina legislature failed an attempt to reverse itself and pass legislation that would have nullified its bathroom bill just before Christmas, Patrick sent a note applauding the collapse of the effort.“Legislation to protect women’s privacy and business is essential to assure that sexual predators … will not be able to freely enter women’s restrooms, locker rooms or showers … ” Patrick’s note said. However, many of the Texas GOP’s most lucrative donors have indicated they’re going to the mat to stop bathroom legislation from passing in Texas. The Texas Association of Business held a press conference last month to announce results of a study, commissioned by the TAB and conducted by researchers at St. Edwards University in Austin, which estimated a Lone Star bathroom bill could cost the state upwards of $8 billion in economic impact and 100,000 jobs.“The message from the Texas business community is loud and clear,” Chris Wallace, president of the TAB, said in front of the Texas Capitol. “Protecting Texas from billions of dollars in losses is simple: Don’t pass unnecessary laws that discriminate against Texans and our visitors.”While Texas’s lieutenant governor is hot for a bathroom bill, his counterpart in the Texas House, Speaker Joe Strauss, is not “This isn’t the most urgent concern of mine,” Strauss said.Strauss is expected to be the business community’s political backstop, and he’s got the clout in the House to ensure that any bathroom legislation languishes and dies in committee. Not only would that please many influential donors, it would spare Republican House members from having to make a politically tricky vote. And where is Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on the subject? He’s currently sitting atop the fence. Abbott says a wait-and-see approach is prudent until an actual bill is produced and the details — and political and economic ramifications — can be carefully scrutinized.Copyright 2017 NPR. Then her dad took her to HISD headquarters to meet up with dozens more Houston teenagers headed on a five-day college tour in New England.“This is my first time going on an airplane, so I’m, like, really nervous,” Trize said, as she clutched a fuzzy blue stuffed dolphin – her pillow pet – and her Tweety Bird blanket. “I kissed all of them and let them know I love them and everything, like, ‘Ok guys! I’m really nervous but I’ll let you know about the trip once I get off!’”At HISD headquarters, Trize, her dad and all the other families had a second goodbye. It’s called a despedida in Spanish.“Despedida, it means send-off, congratulations,” said Trisha Cornwell, director of EMERGE, a college advising nonprofit that connects high achieving students from low-income communities to top tier colleges. Research shows that these students are often overlooked in the admissions process.Cornwell said that they want to include parents in their kids’ college journey way before graduation and also create a community among parents going through the same experience. For many of the students, a summer college tour is their first time away from their families, outside the state or on a plane. In some ways, it’s practice for what’s coming.“We know that if we’re going to convince more students to test out schools outside the city, we have to think of this as a family decision and not a student decision,” Cornwell said. That’s why EMERGE started holding despedidas for teenagers headed on college tours last summer. This past Sunday, dozens of parents and family members lined the hallway of HISD’s headquarters. They cheered and held up handmade signs with messages like ‘We Love You’ and ‘Good Luck’ as their kids rolled their suitcases down the hallway to the white bus waiting in the parking lot to take them to the airport.Trize’s dad Broger Gipson gave her one more hug. He said that he’ glad she’s getting this experience, but had mixed feelings, just like his 16-year-old daughter.“I’m a bit nervous because she’s going far from me and anytime she goes far from me I’m always worried,” Gipson said. “I’m hoping that she gets a chance to learn something, that’s not only just educational for herself, but for schools and different other things … Of course, when she comes back she’s going to tell me every full detail, from day one to day last.”Maybe in two years, Trize, who’s a junior at Kashmere High School, will go to college in New England, instead of her current top choice of Texas A&M University.Laura Isensee/Houston Public MediaFor most students in the EMERGE college advising program, this summer’s college tour outside of Texas marks the first time they’ve been outside Texas or on an airplane. HELP NAME THE MARYLAND ZOOS NEWEST PENGUIN CHICKS

first_imgNew Penguin Chicks. (Photo – Screenshot from Maryland Zoo/YouTube video)BALTIMORE, MD – The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is happy to announce the hatching of two African penguin chicks – the first to be hatched at the Zoo’s new Penguin Coast exhibit!   “We hoped that moving the penguin colony in the beginning of breeding season would not impact egg laying this year, so we are delighted to welcome these first two chicks,” said Jen Kottyan, avian collection and conservation manager. “These chicks are not only the first to hatch this season; they are also being raised as part of our Animal Ambassador program. That means they will be traveling far and wide in the Zoomobile on education outreach programs.”The female chicks hatched on October 4 and October 9, and now they need names!  “The chicks are very healthy and are thriving under the care of the Animal Embassy staff,” continued Kottyan. “They now have their juvenile feathers, and they are very vocal chicks. We are looking for names to compliment the penguins already in the program – Tails, Winnie and Lilly.”The names, selected by a variety of Zoo staff are:–Shelly and Sandy – for the variety of beaches where they live in South AfricaNellie and Mandie – for Nelson MandelaDaisy and Rose – flower names to compliment current penguin LillyDawn and Hope –  Dawn for the dishwashing detergent that is used to clean wild penguins caught in oil spills and Hope for the Cape of Good Hope, home to the Boulders Penguin Colony. The Maryland Zoo has been a leader in breeding African penguins for over 40 years, winning the prestigious Edward H. Bean Award for the “African Penguin Long-term Propagation Program” from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 1996.   The Zoo has one of the largest colonies of the birds in North America, with over 60 birds currently residing in the new Penguin Coast exhibit.  “Our penguins are bred according to recommendations from the AZA African Penguin Species Survival Plan (SSP) which helps maintain their genetic diversity,” said Kottyan.  “Many of the African penguins previously bred at the Zoo now inhabit zoo and aquarium exhibits around the world.”Penguin chicks take 38-42 days to hatch out of their eggs after they are laid. Zoo keepers monitor development of the eggs by candling them about a week after they are laid to see if they are fertile and developing.  The eggs are then placed back with the parents.  “Both the male and the female take turns sitting on the eggs,” said Kottyan. “Once the eggs hatch, parents take turns caring for their offspring; they each protect, feed, and keep the chick warm for 2-3 days and then switch off.”At Penguin Coast, chicks stay with their parents for about three weeks after they hatch and are fed regurgitated fish from their parents. During this time, zoo keepers and vets keep a close eye on the development of the chicks, weighing and measuring them daily for the first week to make sure that the parents are properly caring for each chick.  When a chick is three-weeks-old, the keepers remove it from the nest, and start to teach the chick that they are the source of food. This step is critical as it will allow staff to provide long term care for the birds including daily feeding, regular health exams and both routine and emergency medical care.  “For these chicks, hand rearing is especially important as they will be an important part of our education program and will need to get used to any number of different situations,” continued Kottyan.  “We’d like to make sure they have family friendly names so they can take their place with our other penguin Animal Ambassadors like Tails, Winnie and Lilly.”Visit the Maryland Zoo website at  http://www.marylandzoo.org/Penguinnames for video, photos and the chance to vote on your favorite names!  Voting is open from Friday, December 5th thru Saturday, December 20th.  You can vote once per day, so visit often to make sure your voice is heard.  The winning names will be announced on December 21st.About The Maryland Zoo in BaltimoreFounded in 1876, The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is the third oldest zoo in the United States and is internationally known for its contributions in conservation and research. Blue light from smartphones may speed blindness

first_imgBlue light emitted from smartphones and other digital devices can accelerate blindness by transforming vital molecules in the eye’s retina into cell killers, a study has found.Macular degeneration, an incurable eye disease that results in significant vision loss starting on average in a person’s 50s or 60s, is the death of photoreceptor cells in the retina. Those cells need molecules called retinal to sense light and trigger a cascade of signalling to the brain. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”We are being exposed to blue light continuously, and the eye’s cornea and lens cannot block or reflect it,” said Ajith Karunarathne, an assistant professor at University of Toledo in the US.”It’s no secret that blue light harms our vision by damaging the eye’s retina. Our experiments explain how this happens, and we hope this leads to therapies that slow macular degeneration, such as a new kind of eye drop,” said Karunarathne. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, found that blue light exposure causes retinal to trigger reactions that generate poisonous chemical molecules in photoreceptor cells. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsive”It’s toxic. If you shine blue light on retinal, the retinal kills photoreceptor cells as the signalling molecule on the membrane dissolves,” said Kasun Ratnayake, a PhD student researcher working in Karunarathne’s group.”Photoreceptor cells do not regenerate in the eye. When they’re dead, they’re dead for good,” said Ratnayak.Karunarathne introduced retinal molecules to other cell types in the body, such as cancer cells, heart cells and neurons. When exposed to blue light, these cell types died as a result of the combination with retinal. Blue light alone or retinal without blue light had no effect on cells. “No activity is sparked with green, yellow or red light. The retinal-generated toxicity by blue light is universal. It can kill any cell type,” Karunarathne said. The researcher found that a molecule called alpha tocoferol, a Vitamin E derivative and a natural antioxidant in the eye and body, stops the cells from dying. However, as a person ages or the immune system is suppressed, people lose the ability to fight against the attack by retinal and blue light.”If you look at the amount of light coming out of your cell phone, it’s not great but it seems tolerable,” Dr. in the UT Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, said.”Some cell phone companies are adding blue-light filters to the screens, and I think that is a good idea,” said John Payton, visiting assistant professor at University of Toledo.last_img read more
